My love for music started at a very young age, being played a random selection of artists ranging from Pink Floyd, The Beatles & ABBA with constant Bollywood classics thrown in for fun.
The Beginning
It wasn’t until I was 14 that I had a feel for breakbeat music – my cousin in Leicester was a pure vinyl junkie and a regular addict at Formation Records – this was 1992 where it all began and was all going off. Unfortunately for me, I would only hear rave, jungle techno & classic house when I was visiting Leicester. When I got home it was your usual mainstream pop and where I lived, with no transport and no internet (back in the day), I was subdued to my local record shop in Rickmansworth. I would visit the record store on my bike once a week to buy CD singles of tune ‘I thought’ I liked. I did not know where I was heading musically, buying a mixture of dance and ‘RnB’ CD’s which faintly rocked my boat.
A New Dawn
At school my friends started talking and buzzing about something called Jungle and it wasn’t until I attended World Dance 5th November 1994 for Charge's 18th Birthday, that it hit me smack in the face – I had found my sound. The amen breaks, thundering basslines and amazing ragga vocal samples totally infused me. Topped off with DJ’s like Bukem, Hype, Slip-Matt, Mickey Finn, Grooverider and the greatest MC of all time GQ. My gosh, it was the beginning of my musical path and continues to be a part of my lifes journey.
DJ Rampant
From 1995 I caught the vinyl bug and began to buy Jungle records. By this time I was at University; again back to Leicester, where I found the art of DJing. After a constant non-stop frantic 14 day mixing session I had found the formula. From there I progressed to an appreciative standard. My friend circle expanded rapidly ever year and in 1997 I became acquainted to the African & Caribbean Society where Soul, RnB & Ragga parties were a weekly event. A close friend on my course introduced to me to the head DJ and organiser and an immediate friendship began where daily afternoon Jungle Sessions roared from my bedroom and led me to play regular slots at house parties all over Leicester and eventually on Demon FM, the University Radio Station.
Nu-Perception
Today and at present I play weekly on Nu-Perception.com the drum and bass & old skool internet radio station. Long time friend DJ Charge introduced me to the brain child of Lockey, Treasure and Mr P. With a complete roster of outstanding DJ talent, playing the most diverse selection of breakbeat music, Nu-Perception strives forward and is creating a community representing the deeper sounds of drum and bass and its origins.
